About the Position

Duties:

Leadership and Discipleship – 65%

  • Give leadership to staff and those assigned to the Equine Area (up to 12 staff in high seasons). This includes creating systems to develop the skills and experience of Barn staff as riders and leaders. Discipleship and mentorship of staff spiritually, using the animals as key tools. Seek to develop the ongoing discipleship and skills of Summer Barn Staff and Wrangler Up campers throughout the year.
  • Lead an average of two-thirds of guest trail rides.
  • Lead at least one Horsemanship group in the summer.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Ministries in hiring and screening of Barn Staff Applicants.

New Program Development – 5%

  • Collaborate with senior management to develop riding lessons and special programs offered through the Barn.
  • Innovate and seek to improve existing Programs.
  • Oversee the camp’s Barn social media sites (Facebook, Instagram).

Herd Management – 20%

  • Sell, buy, and train new horses for the trail string.
  • Oversee the daily barn tasks. Barn tasks include but are not limited to, daily chores, feeding/watering, horse care, and first aid.
  • Create and implement a yearly grazing and winter feeding plan, including connecting with hay donors from our connected farming communities.
  • Arrange for hay donations, and if needed, purchase for winter feed. Donor follow-up and care included.
  • Collaborate with the Site Manager on winter feeding.
  • Keep accurate records about the horse herd, their health, purchase/sale, saddle, etc.
  • Monitor the health and wellness of the horse herd. Involve the Vet Services if necessary.
  • In coordination with Hopsitality and Program, manage the development and implementation of equine programming, including but not limited to Trail Rides, Horse Care, Mini Barn, etc.

Business Planning, Infrastructure and Maintenance – 10%

  • Ensure the cleanliness of the barn area: corrals, stalls, sheds, and paddocks must be kept in park-like condition.
  • Responsible for proper pasture rotation and management.
  • Collaborate with the Site Manager on fencing, trail, and weed maintenance.
  • Prepare an annual operational plan to the Executive Director and work with the Business Director to prepare annual budgets for barn programming to meet strategic objectives.

Skills:

  • Faith and Spirituality: Have a personal profession of faith in Jesus for salvation and evidence of a Christian faith. A member or adherent in an evangelical church.
  • Equine Knowledge: Demonstrated experience working with and training horses.
  • Leadership Skills: Excellent communication, team-building, and mentorship abilities; ability to handle sensitive, challenging, and/ or confidential situations respectfully and compassionately.
  • Camp Knowledge: Experience in camping ministry is an asset (3+ years).
  • Heath & Stamina: Good physical health and stamina to perform hands-on work in an outdoor setting
  • Administrative Skills: Proficient in basic computer and tech applications; skilled in multitasking and prioritizing.
  • License & Clearances: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (insurable), clean background checks, and willingness to operate larger farm equipment (tractor).

Standard of Practice:

  • The Ranch Director position will be filled on a one-year contract with three months of probation. At the review of the first year, if all parties agree, a full-time permanent contract may be pursued.
  • Year-end reviews will be conducted with the Executive Director.
  • Camp Evergreen is a mission-based organization whose programs fall outside a stereotypical Monday-Friday work week. Days off/Statutory Holidays may fall irregularly while adhering to Alberta Labour Standards for employment.
  • Housing may be available.
